SIG-FADADVS
Fostering Academic Development for Academcially Disadvantaged in Vocational Settings |
|
Purposes of the Special Interest Group
- To advance theoretical and empirical research targeting on academically disadvantaged students in vocational settings, particularly in the PRC, given that yearly enrollment into mainland SVE schools consists of an increasingly large number of low-achieving, unmotivated, and "at-risk" junior secondary school students. Urgently, this phenomenon has become a major obstacle preventing positive development of SVE in mainland China.
- To develop enhancement programs focusing on motivational and cognitive ability trainings in real classroom settings to improve desirable educational outcomes of vocational students; particularly, the effectiveness of teacher-mediated enhancing programs in secondary vocation educational settings in mainland China would be a promising research area for the SIG to pursue, given that the Chinese government is increasing financial and politic support to change the status quo of contemporary secondary vocational education
- To provide workshops for teachers in SVE in order to improve their adequate understanding of evidence-based enhancement programs (designed by the SIG) to: a) prompt SVE students' achievement-related motivation and cognition factors, b) facilitate effective implementations of relevant enhancement interventions in natural classroom settings, and c) strengthen intervention effects on promoting targeted motivational and cognitive aspects that would play a pivotal role in affecting SVE students' academic achievement.
- To conduct comparative studies between subgroups in the Chinese culture for providing a broader picture of theoretical and empirical research in vocational settings; comparative studies between vocational and non-vocational schools are also worthwhile to investigate for developing effective interventions to maximize low-achieving and unmotivated adolescent students'?potential to learn and to succeed in the long run
