Comparative Education Society of Asia (CESA)

In May 1995 the Comparative Education Society of Asia was formally established after the long preparation. The Society was founded to promote exchange and cooperation in research and teaching in comparative education in Asia and to promote mutual understanding and friendship among educationists in Asia.

The membership of the Society is on an individual basis. Any scholar or student who has interests in comparative education research and teaching is able to join the CESA. Activities of the Society in the immediate future would be holding conferences and issuing newsletters and so on. The first founding conference is scheduled to be held in the period of 9-12 December 1996 in Tokyo, Japan.

The SERI (Southern Educational Research Initiative):

The major networks of educational researchers met in Santiago, Chile in January 9-12, 1996. The Inter-network workshop was hosted by REDUC (Red Latinoamericana de Información y Documentación en Educación), one of the six networks in the South, the others being the CCCER (CARRICOM Coordinating Committee on Educational Research), ERNESA (Educational Research Network for Eastern and Southern Africa), ERNWACA (Educational Research Network for Western and Central Africa), SAFER (South Asian Federation for Educational Research), and SEARRAG (South East Asian Research Review and Advisory Group). The six networks form a liaison of network known as the SERI. Participating in the workshop is also NORRAG (Northern Research Review Advisory Group on Education and Training) which comprises researchers from the North who are concerned about education in the South. The workshop has brought fruitful results. Inter alia, all the networks found it necessary to strengthen the liaison, although a formal structure is not favoured. The workshop also explored various ways of information sharing among networks, and discussed the benchmarks for the development of networks. Prof. Cheng Kai-ming (incidentally a member of CERC), who has been chairing the Steering Committee of SERI, was elected the "focal person" for further liaisons.
