CERC News
W.O. Lee Moves to HKIEd
Prof. Lee Wing On, the founding Director of CERC, has recently taken the position of Dean of the School of Foundations in Education at the Hong Kong Institute of Education (HKIEd). We congratulate him on this appointment, and wish him every success.
Fortunately for CERC, Prof. Lee's appointment, at least in the first instance, is on secondment from the University of Hong Kong. He remains fully committed to CERC activities, and continues to hold his seat on CERC's Executive Committee.
Forthcoming Visitors
CERC looks forward to welcoming two distinguished visitors in the coming months:
Prof. Gu Mingyuan, from Beijing Normal University, will come under the sponsorship of the Vice-Chancellor's special fund in December 1998. Prof. Gu is President of the China Comparative Education Society, and has played a leading role in the development of the field in China.
Prof. Ivor Goodson, from the University of East Anglia in the United Kingdom, will come as the Faculty of Education Onwel Fellow in February-March 1999. Prof. Goodson is well known for his comparative work on curriculum and policy issues in education.
A CERC Student in Nanjing
Greg Fairbrother, a Ph.D. student in comparative education, has spent the fall 1998 term conducting fieldwork in Nanjing. Having carried out in-depth interviews with Hong Kong university students concerning their attitudes toward China and the influence they consider schooling has had on these attitudes, one purpose of the fieldwork has been to carry out similar interviews among mainland university students. At the same time, he is examining how patriotic education is implemented in a Nanjing secondary school level, by analyzing political education textbooks, interviewing teachers and administrators responsible for patriotic education, and classroom observations.
