From the Director:
CERC is now in its third year of operation. It has many achievements to date, and looks forward to further development.
My annual report to CERC members, presented in March 1997, began with recognition of the efforts of my predecessor as Director, Lee Wing On. These remarks must be repeated here. Thanks to Dr Lee's dedicated and farsighted leadership, CERC had an excelle nt start in life. I consider myself fortunate to be able still to count on Dr Lee's support in his capacity as a member of the Executive Committee.
The present issue of CERCular shows that CERC is playing a major role at all levels, i.e. within:
- the Faculty of Education at the University of Hong Kong,
- the broader framework of the university,
- Hong Kong as a whole,
- China, and
- the international community.
During the year from March 1996, CERC membership expanded from 32 to 86. Among these, 50 are staff of the University, 34 are higher degree students in the University, and two are Associates. These members have played an active role in research, publicat ion, seminars, consultancy, and contribution to the broader field of comparative education. We have a growing list of collaborative ventures with colleagues in mainland China; and we are proud to have considerable visibility in the international communi ty.
All readers of this newsletter are invited to join in our efforts. I particularly call attention to our pair of electronic bulletin boards, which focus on education in China and on more general aspects of comparative education. The column on them indica tes how new members can subscribe (free of charge). I also invite readers to visit our web site: http://www.fe.hku.hk/cerc.
