Background:

Since the initiation of educational reforms in the People's Republic of China (PRC) in the late 1970s, many goals have been set and much progress made towards achieving success. This conference, the fifth in a series, explores the many advances the PRC has made toward educational modernization. It focuses on the results of current research studies over a wide range of educational issues. Given Hong Kong's ideal location between East and West, the conference aims to surface comparative perspectives by bringing together educationalists from China and abroad.

The first call for papers generated 94 proposals (69 from China, 25 from abroad). Panels and workshops have been proposed on research methodology and computer applications in education. As planning continues, we are issuing a second call with later deadlines and additional suggested themes. Scholars are invited to submit proposals for individual papers, panels or workshops.

Papers, panels and workshops:

If possible, individual papers will be compiled and printed before the conference begins, so that more time can be devoted to discussion. Proposals for panels involving 3 or 4 paper presentations on a theme are welcome, and a panel chair should be designated.

Workshops will disseminate research results as well as allow for the sharing of research methodologies among conference participants. Topics might cover (but are not limited to) teacher education, educational exchanges, literacy, curriculum development, educational attainment, or other subjects. Methods of investigation might include: quantitative data collection and analysis, survey design and statistical analysis, qualitative and ethnographic design. Special workshops could focus on education and technology. Workshops in putonghua are especially welcome.

Deadline and submission details:

The deadline for submission of proposals is December 1, 1996. Proposals for workshops and abstracts for papers should be approximately 250 words and submitted either electronically or on the attached form. All successful presenters will be notified concerning registration and accommodation fees as well as possibilities for financial support. Abstracts that are accepted should be expanded into full, completed papers and submitted by January 31, 1997.

To encourage the participation of new scholars presenting dissertation research, funds are being sought to provide partial subsidies. Enquiries should be made after acceptance of papers and workshop proposals. For funding consideration, full papers must be submitted.

Conference venue:

The conference venue is the Chinese University of Hong Kong with possible venues at various other institutions in Hong Kong. Accommodation for participants is available at the University's guest houses. Conferences languages will be English and Chinese (putonghua).
