This paper will analyse the role of English at Universiti Brunei Darussalam, providing background to the decisions made about the various teaching mediums as well as an outline and explanation about the current situation. The paper will provide information on Brunei’s language mosaic and the perceived roles that these languages play. The paper will also analyse the various advantages and disadvantages that the university experiences as a result of the use of English. The paper will conclude with discussion about the future role of English at UBD.
Gary M. Jones is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of English Language & Applied Linguistics and Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences at the University of Brunei Darussalam. Prior to working in Brunei, Dr Jones had worked as a language consultant in Britain, Germany, Sri Lanka and Abu Dhabi.
