The Hall of Mirrors Re-visited: Monash University as a Site of Dynamic Language and Cultural Contact

This paper explores the role of English as a medium of instruction at the multi-campus, multilingual organisation that is Monash University operating across six Australian campuses, one Malaysian and one South African, with Centres in, and links to, a number of other countries. The paper considers the current state of play for English in use, taking into account pedagogical, policy, political and strategic developments. In taking account of the situated and dynamic nature of literacy practices at the university, the paper explores what is similar and what is very different at the different sites. The ways external and internal forces act and interact on the nature of English in the university will be examined. A particular focus is how these forces might shape language use across all campuses as students and staff engage in a highly complex range of contact situations. Identities are "at risk" as students and staff seek to understand how to see others and themselves in terms of "local" and "international". The discussion connects with current debates around internationalisation of the curriculum, and the importance of privileging diversity and using it as a resource.

Rosemary Clerehan has been head of the university-wide Language and Learning Services Unit at Monash University, 1996-2005, supporting students in their learning and staff in their teaching, particularly of NESB students.
