What are phrasal verbs?: Form and function

The function of the phrasal verb in the clause is no different from that of any other kind of main verb:

Form Function
phrasal verb

Expresses what is happening in the clause, eg calling off (Miss Lee called the test off.) The phrasal verb is the 'lexical' verb in the clause.

The different elements of the phrasal verb, ie main verb and particle (adverb, preposition, adverb + preposition), refer to particular forms which perform different functions in the verb group. Note

Note that the term Process is written with a capital letter to remind us that it is a functional term.
