Playing sports and doing activities: Student problems

Because it is common in English to talk about playing sports (eg playing basketball or playing tennis) students often over-generalise:

Dotty is going to play bowling in Kowloon City Plaza.

It is important to point out that the verb play is almost never followed by an -ing noun:

 Dotty is going to go bowling in Kowloon City Plaza. [the most likely way of expressing this]
