Singular and plural forms

Plural nouns with regular patterns

Countable nouns have a singular form and a plural form. The plural form usually ends in '-s', but not always:

singular

plural

cat
book
apple

cats
books
apples

Pronunciation of plural nouns

You can help your students by focusing on the three possible pronunciations for plural 's':

ipa-s.gif (849 bytes)

ipa-az.gif (864 bytes)

ipa-z.gif (846 bytes)
beliefs
books
maps
cats
maths
buses
prizes
ages
bushes
arms
bottles
cards
girls
legs

Note that the ipa-z.gif (846 bytes) sound is the most common. A useful rule of thumb is to pronounce the plural ipa-s.gif (849 bytes) when the 's' follows one of the following sounds: 'ipa-f.gif (830 bytes)', 'ipa-k.gif (832 bytes)', 'ipa-p.gif (836 bytes)', 'ipa-t.gif (828 bytes)' and soft 'ipa-th.gif (849 bytes)' as in maths. The ipa-az.gif (864 bytes) pronunciation is only used after 'ipa-sh.gif (849 bytes)', 'ipa-ch.gif (849 bytes)', 'ipa-j.gif (828 bytes)', 'ipa-s1.gif (823 bytes)', 'ipa-z1.gif (826 bytes)' or 'ipa-x.gif (828 bytes)' sounds.

What rules can I give my students for forming plurals?

If the noun ends in '-s', '-x', '-z', '-ch', '-sh', then the plural is formed by adding '-es':

singular

plural

circus
box
quiz
branch
bush

circuses
boxes
quizzes
branches
bushes

If the noun ends in a consonant plus '-y', then the plural is formed by replacing the '-y'  with '-ies':

singular

plural

ability
activity
authority
battery
story
abilities
activities
authorities
batteries
stories
