Grammar: Word classes: Verbs

Overview

What are the different types of verb?

There are many different ways of classifying verbs. For teaching purposes, it is useful to put verbs into four different categories, depending on the work that they do:

Some verbs express physical actions and events. We can call these 'doing' verbs (swim, climb, crawl). Animation

Some verbs do not express physical actions; rather, they express processes that take place in our brains, involving thoughts and feelings. We can call these 'thinking, feeling and perceiving' verbs (wonder, think, like, need, see). Animation

Some verbs are used to report the words which people have said. We can call these 'saying' verbs (ask, answer, say). Animation

Some verbs help us to identify or describe some characteristic of a person or thing. We can call these 'relating' verbs (be, seem, appear). Animation

Can you identify different types of verbs?

Try it out!

When dealing with language in the classroom, it is useful to be able to identify different types of verbs because of the different grammatical patterns associated with each type.
