Since 1995, Hong Kong has been participating in the study and Professor Frederick K.S. Leung has been the Principal investigator of the research. It has been conducted by the Hong Kong Centre for IEA Studies under the Faculty of Education of the University of Hong Kong. The analysis of trends will contribute to evaluating the effectiveness of the education reforms undertaken in recent years. We strongly hope that schools, parents, and Education Bureau in Hong Kong can work together for this research, in order to:
- comprehend the mathematics and science achievements of grade 4 and grade 8 students in Hong Kong;
- investigate factors affecting Hong Kong students learning mathematics and science, including how teachers and schools, and even students themselves affecting their attitude to the subjects;
- establish a evaluation tool for the ability of mathematics and science of students, so as to assist teachers to evaluate students’ performance;
- design the best teaching strategy and methods of mathematics and science;
- compare the mathematics and science ability, study environment at home and at schools of Hong Kong students nowadays with those in previous;
- compare the mathematics and science achievements of Hong Kong students with those around the world to assist Hong Kong schools and Education Bureau to design their educational tactics.
