TIMSS 1999

TIMSS 1999 was the second administration of IEA’s Third International Mathematics and Science Study. Nearly 40 countries participated in TIMSS 1999.

The 1999 assessment measured the mathematics and science achievement of eighth-grade students. Since fourth-grade students in 1995 were in eighth-grade in 1999, these countries can compare their eighth-grade performance with their performance at the fourth-grade in 1995, as well as with the eighth-grade performance of students in other countries.

To inform educational policy in the participating countries, this world-wide assessment and research project also routinely collects extensive background information that addresses concerns about the quantity, quality, and content of instruction.
