Dr Anwei Feng
University of Durham
Presentation: Trilingualism or Bilingualism or Else? Language Use and Provision for Ethnic Minorities in China

Dr Feng holds an MA degree in applied linguistics at Essex University (1990) and a PhD in education (2000) at the University of Durham. Having taught English language and communication skills at tertiary institutions in China, Hong Kong and Singapore, he joined the school of education at Durham University in 2002.

At Durham, he teaches intercultural studies and bilingual education courses at masters and doctorate levels and is module convenor for the intercultural studies module. Dr. Feng has supervisory responsibility for PhD and EdD students whose thesis topics include 'intercultural education in multicultural societies', 'intercultural team teaching', and 'humanized pedagogical model in TESOL' for different contexts.

Dr Feng is currently an invited editor for a double special issue for the International Journal of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism and is leading a research project on synergetic culture on UK university campuses.
Professor Rong Ma
Peking University
Presentation: Education of Ethnic Minorities in Contemporary China

Ma Rong is Professor and Chair at the Department of Sociology at Peking University, China. He received his BA in Design of Agricultural Machinery from Agricultural College of Inner Mongolia, China, his MA and PhD in Sociology from Brown University, U.S.A. He currently serves as a Director at the Institute of Sociology and Anthropology, Peking University. Professor Ma has published a number of articles concerning minority education and other related areas in journals overseas and in mainland China. His edited book China's Rural Entrepreneurs was published in 1995. His latest edited book Local Governance and Grassroots Democracy in India and China: Right to participate was published in 2007.
Dr Minglang Zhou
Dickinson College
Presentation: Changing Models of State-Building and Language Ideology in Contemporary China

Minglang Zhou is associate professor and chair of East Asian Studies at Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA. His current research focuses on language policy, multilingualism, and ethnic relations in China. His book Multilingualism in China: The politics of writing reform for minority languages 1949–2002 appears in the Contribution to the Sociology of Language Series, and his edited book Language policy in China: Theory and practice since 1949 is published in the Language Policy Series. He is currently editing (with Ann Hill) Affirmative Action in China and the U.S.: A Dialogue on Inequality and Minority Education for the Comparative & Development Education Series and is guest-editing an issue of Chinese Society and Education on the topic of language harmony in China. He teaches Chinese, linguistics, and East Asian studies.
