Describing people and things

Focus on grammar

In particular descriptions most of the description of the topic is done by noun groups Glossary and adjective groups Glossary

Tess is a small, black, long-haired lap dog with one white paw.

noun group

Boris the bat is furry and chubby.

adjective group

We use relating clauses Glossary to link the topic with a noun group or adjective group description. Usually the relating clauses use the relating verbs be or have:

It is a small, black, long-haired lap dog with one white paw.
He is furry and chubby.

When we describe people and things, we often describe what they possess. To do this, we usually use either the relating verb have or we add a possessive noun or possessive adjective to a noun group.

She      has        a smart red collar with a name tag.

relating verb

       my        dog Tess
possessive pronoun

the   dog's       name

possessive noun
