Phrasal verbs Back

Verb + adverb + preposition

Phrasal verbs formed with adverb + preposition use adverbs and prepositions such as ahead, apart, aside, away, back, forward, home, in front, on top, out

The students moved out of their leaking classroom. [vacated]
When Bozo was sick, he stayed away from school. [remained absent]

Phrasal verbs with adverb + preposition are largely restricted to informal or colloquial English, and often have a one-word equivalent:

Mrs Gong doesn't put up with Bozo answering her back. [tolerate]
She put his talk down to his youth. [attributed]

But a phrasal verb may be informal without having a one-word equivalent:

Bozo thinks he can get away with anything. [escape punishment even if caught]

Some of the adverbs in phrasal verbs of this type correspond to complex prepositions, eg away from, ahead of, apart from, and in that function are sometimes called 'prepositional adverbs'.
