Past perfect Back

Reported speech

The past perfect is very commonly used together with a reporting verb (say, tell, answer) in the past simple.

In this example it is easy to see that the action or event which is referred to (filled his bag) must have occurred before it can be reported (said).

It is not just reporting verbs which are used in this way, but also some thinking verbs (think, realise, remember, know):

Granny Gong remembered that Miss Lee had noticed the children sleeping in class.
