Past perfect Back

Situations which did not happen

The past perfect is also used for the 'third conditional' Glossary, so called because it expresses an unreal or conditional situation.

If I had known you were coming, I would have prepared something.

It is also used with verbs which express hopes and wishes:

I wish I had known you were coming.

In both cases, the past perfect is used to refer to past events which did not happen.
