Irregular verbs Back

-en ending for past participle

Note the following patterns. The past simple is not marked with an -en suffix but the past participle is marked with -en. There is typically a change from the base vowel in either the past simple or the past participle:

base form

past simple

past participle
break
choose
eat
fall
forget
give
speak
take
broke
chose
ate
fell
forgot
gave
spoke
took
broken
chosen
eaten
fallen
forgotten
given
spoken
taken

-n endings

There is a slight variant to this pattern where the past participle is marked with -n (plus typically a change from the base vowel in either the past simple or the past participle):

base form

past simple

past participle
grow
know
see
wear
grew
knew
saw
wore
grown
known
seen
