A list of relating verbs

Here are the most common relating verbs:

be consist of constitute
comprise have  equal
mean represent symbolise

When we use relating verbs to describe, we are often referring to the way we perceive something through our senses, and according to our judgement:

appear feel look (like) *
seem sound smell
taste    

* Students often have problems with the relating verb look.

Some of the verbs in this list (feel, smell, taste) are also 'doing' verbs which we typically use to refer to bodily functions:

Bozo smelled his socks before putting them on.
         doing verb

Bozo's socks often smell awful!
                           relating verb
