A list of relating verbs
Here are the most common relating verbs:
be | consist of | constitute |
comprise | have | equal |
mean | represent | symbolise |
When we use relating verbs to describe, we are often referring to the way we perceive something through our senses, and according to our judgement:
appear | feel | look (like) * |
seem | sound | smell |
taste |
* Students often have problems with the relating verb look.
Some of the verbs in this list (feel, smell, taste) are also 'doing' verbs which we typically use to refer to bodily functions:
Bozo smelled his socks before putting them on.

Bozo's socks often smell awful!
