Communicative functions: Talking about experience

Who or what is involved?

Showing quantities

When talking about the things in our world, we often want to ask questions such as How many? or How much?. The answer might be an exact figure (two, a half, a pair of) or a more vague quantity (many, a few).

Basic quantity words are usually taught very early so that learners can participate in activities involving such things as:

function example
time It's twelve o'clock
date On 15th August 2003
age I'm ten years old
family I have one brother and two sisters.
measurements I'm 92 centimetres tall.
maths Three plus five is eight.
shopping It's twenty-three dollars
