HKU-wide Sociolinguistic Survey The University of Hong Kong

The Study aims to investigate HKU staff and students' existing beliefs, attitudes and practices in relation to language issues by using university-wide questionnaires, focus group interviews and case studies. Dr Chris Davison and Mr Nigel Bruce are the co-convenors of the Collaborative Study Group.

Methodology

A university-wide questionnaire will be administered next academic year in order to obtain a sociolinguistic profile of undergraduates. Tailor-made questionnaires will also be designed to target specific informant groups within the university community e.g. different disciplinary areas, local/non local students, and local / expatriate teachers. These questionnaires will be followed by focus group interviews and representative case studies to enable more in-depth analysis at the later stage. On-going case studies conducted by current PhD students are also contributing to the Study, e.g. as part of research on the use of language in the Economics curriculum and the language practices of mainland Chinese students at HKU.
