Grammar: Word classes: Adjectives

Describing qualities and attributes

Size and shape

When we want someone to picture something in their mind, it helps if we can describe its size, shape, quantity, extent, weight, and so on:

Size/weight

Many of these adjectives describe 'opposites':

Some, however, can be seen along a 'scale':

massive/great/huge/enormous  >  large/big  >  medium  >  little/small  >  tiny

Shape

When we describe something in terms of its shape, we can use geometric descriptions:

cylindrical flat oval
rectangular round solid
spherical square triangular

We can also use more 'natural' descriptions:

crooked curved flowing
jagged jelly-like pear-shaped
roly-poly slim straight
